Hi folks,
here I am starting all over again. So what is my first TT-post after 6 months goin to be about?
Well I thought about giving you a list of13 literature classics I had to read for my literature exams in anglistics. I bet you know all of them, have read some of them, even like a few and maybe I can inspire you to grab one of those and have a look at it again. Books change - if you look at them after 10 years you might find that your point of view on them has changed, that you see and understand different things now.
So here we go:
1.) The picture of Dorian Gray - by Oscar Wilde
2.) Dracula - by Bram Stoker
3.) Ecotopia - by Ernest Callenbach
4.) Pride and Prejudice - by Jane Austen
5.) The Scarlett Letter - by Nathaniel Hawthorne
6.) Kim - by Rudyard Kipling
7.) A Handmaid's Tale - by Margaret Atwood
8.) The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn - by Mark Twain
9.) Salome - by Oscar Wilde
10.) Death of a Salesman - by Arthur Mille
11.) The Great Gatsby - by F. Scott Fitzgerald
12.) Hills like White Elephants - by Ernest Hemmingway
13.) She walks in beauty - by Lord Byron

happy tt and #3 is one of my all-time favorite books.
I know of them all, but I've only read two. I rather think that Salome was banned when it was first published. Maybe I should read that one. What are anglistics?
These are all great!!! I do plan on rereading Dracula one day soonly :) Happy TT
The Handmaid's Tale is one I think I'll place on my 'needs to be read again' list. Thanks for the inspiration (smile).
I've only read 2, 5, 7 & 8! Great list...I think I might give Dorian Gray a go!
I love most of these. Numbers 4 and 5 are my favorites.
@nicholas: Anglistics is a university subject that includes English language, literature and cultural studies. I think "English studies" is a known term for it.
@all: It's so cool that most you know and read those books. If you think about rereading one - enjoy it!
You're exactly right. I recognize all of them, like most of them, and think I might re-read Kim. I was a kid when I read it the first time.

you know, you're so right. i really should pick these up again! (great list by the way!) i am so curious to see what i would think about them now that i am way older (and i would hope wiser.) haha!
I was SUPPOSED to read the Great Gatsby once, but never made it through it. I HATED that book
Great reads all of them. You might want to check out "Death Be Not Proud" by John Gunther.

I've read all except Ecotopia. Jane austen is one of my favourites, but hemingway and Lord Byron are great too!

2,4,8 & 11 I actually remember reading from high school and college. Great books and a fun TT. Happy TT and thanks for stopping by my place.
I've read some of Arthut Miller's and Hemmingway's books a while ago. Not bad. But that's about it from your list. Shame on me :o)
I probably read them all but the titles are different in german or french of course. I haven't read them in english.
#10 and #11 each broke my heart and had a lasting impact on me. I know what you mean about books changing. I recently bought Lord of the Flies at a book fair and am eager to reread it. I loved it when I was in high school, and wonder if it will still be spellbinding, now that I'm an adult. (Thanks for visiting my TT)
#4 is my all time fav I love what you said about change it is so true as we age they change or in some cases they do not
I remember reading Gatsby in high school almost two decades ago and I still remember thinking...huh?
I've seen about five of them as movies but don't remember reading even one on that list.
Google Miracle Suit and see what they look like. I got mine at 70% off in an Eddie Bauer outlet store. What a score.
The Great Gatsby was a HS assignment, it is ...odd? However Huck Finn is one of my favorites. Great list.

5, 8, 10, and 11 were my favorites in high school. Grat list!
i have read #4,5,7,8 & 13. I have heard of all the others except #3. but it is true that all those i have read were read before 1994 a pivotal year in my life after which i viewed everything i encountered with new eyes. i should probably revisit most of them.
Isn't it great how you can re-read a book a decade later and get a new take on the story! I love it!

I just took one of my childhood favorites out of the shelf - a story by Astrid Lindgren - and started to read it again. And it's fabulous!

I've read 'Hills Like White Elephants'.
I love Hemingway's style. Simple yet deep. Plus he's the first great literary icon that I ever read which didn't require me reaching out for a dictionary as much as other writers would.
